Jesus Was No Vegetarian

In its latest ploy for attention, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has been driving around in an Airstream trailer modified to house a sculptural (if not scriptural) representation of the last supper. Instead of his traditional disciples, Jesus is flanked in Dallas artist Greg Metz's art piece by the likes of Paul McCartney, lesbian singer K.D. Lang, Gandhi, Einstein, Kafka, and Leonardo da Vinci. The table before them is spread with a healthy looking assortment of plastic vegetables. On the opposite side of the trailer, visitors are confronted with horrific photos of the worse abuses in slaughter houses. Inside, they can catch a screening of the film "Meet Your Meat," narrated by Alec Baldwin.

The mobile unit has proved very effective thus far, but critics have pointed out that Jesus (at least, according to the gospels) was no vegetarian. Consider the following verse from Luke 24:41-43: "He asked them, 'Do you have anything here to eat?' They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence." I know this post is like 2 years old, but I wanted to comment anyway. I have been a vegetarian for about 5 years now and I support animal rights and such, but I am so sick of PETA I could puke. They are so bassackwards. They make shit up all the time and try and use celebrity's to promote their agenda. Plus, they have been known to euthanize animals. Friggin hypocrites.

I have been a vegetarian for almost 15 years and I know this response is almost 2 years old ; ), but I'm kind of sick of vegetarians being sick of PETA...First of all, of course they euthanize animals, every humane shelter does that. The "no kill" shelters are often found to be letting animals suffer under terrible conditions, because they lack the food, water, and shelter that prevents MOST shelters from being able to keep ALL the animals alive. It isn't the solution they would choose it is the best choice available.

Secondly, of course they use celebrities and crazy antics that's how you get Americans to pay attention. You do realize that the civil rights movement of the 60's also used celebrities like Sammy Davis, Jr., Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier, Dick Gregory, Ossie Davis, and Ruby Dee to push their radical agenda to the American public which would have happily ignored it if not PUSHED. So, yes, like ALL organizations PETA is not perfect. I'm not sure what kind of person expected them to be.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a tail chaser and publicity whore in modern terms, but does that mean we should have been so sick of him we could puke...no it means he is an imperfect person trying to get closer to being perfect.
